Day 2 - Rigging for the Long Haul: Paddleboards and Honchos in the Wild

Today was all about prep—getting ready for the long, unforgiving stretch of river ahead. With 4 to 6 months on the Colorado in front of us, we took the time to rig the paddleboard like our lives depend on it (because, let’s be real, they do). Securing gear for a journey like this is half precision, half prayer. Straps tightened, knots triple-checked, dry bags packed tighter than a desert tortoise in its shell. If it’s not tied down, it’s not coming with us.

The board’s rigged for the long haul now. It’s built to endure it all—rapids, flat stretches, brutal winds, and who knows what else. This board isn’t just carrying us; it’s our lifeline for the next several months.

But today wasn’t all about knots and bungees. We also sewed up the first honcho of the trip. Not just any poncho, but a heavy-duty wool beast stitched up with the sewing machine we hauled along for moments like this. In just a few hours, we had ourselves a custom-made honcho that’s going to stand up to everything the Colorado throws at us. Warm for cold river mornings, tough enough for campfire nights, and rugged enough to wear for months without a second thought.

Stay tuned.
