Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa Logo

Tucked away in the Colorado Rockies, Hot Sulphur Springs Resort is a haven for both adventure seekers and relaxation enthusiasts. Known for having the highest mineral concentrations in Colorado, these natural hot springs have been drawing visitors for centuries. Whether you’re unwinding after a long day on the trail or soaking up the area’s rich history, this year-round resort offers an unforgettable experience.

Healing Waters with a Rich Past

Dating back to when the Ute people used the waters for their medicinal properties, Hot Sulphur Springs has long been known for its restorative powers. The springs were formally established as a resort by William Newton Byers, founder of the Rocky Mountain News, in the mid-1800s. Today, the resort boasts 20 mineral-rich pools, each varying in temperature, and is fed naturally by 7 geothermal springs that cycle 200,000 gallons of water daily.

Soaking in hot mineral springs like those at Hot Sulphur Springs Resort, with the highest mineral concentrations in Colorado, can offer a range of potential health benefits. Here's a deeper look into the specific benefits of the minerals found in these waters, such as sodium, sulfate, and magnesium, and how they may enhance well-being:

1. Muscle Recovery and Joint Pain Relief

One of the standout features of Hot Sulphur Springs is its magnesium-rich pools. Magnesium is known for its ability to relieve muscle soreness and reduce inflammation, making these pools a favorite for athletes or anyone recovering from physical activity. As Jed and Jonathan both experienced firsthand, the magnesium pools helped ease their sore muscles and joints after intense hikes and runs.

  • Magnesium supports healthy muscle and nerve function, and it’s often used in therapies to reduce muscle cramps, tension, and even chronic pain. Athletes often seek out magnesium baths as part of their recovery regimen.

2. Stress Relief and Improved Sleep

The natural warmth of the springs helps to soothe the body and promote relaxation. Studies show that hot baths, particularly those enriched with minerals like magnesium, can have a calming effect on the nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety. Soaking in hot springs can help stimulate the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers and mood elevators, leaving visitors feeling more balanced and less tense.

Private Baths are even available.
  • A warm soak before bed can also improve sleep quality, especially when combined with the calming properties of magnesium. For those struggling with insomnia or restlessness, this is an ideal natural remedy.

3. Detoxification and Skin Health

Minerals like sodium, sulfate, and magnesium play an important role in detoxifying the body. When you soak in hot mineral springs, the heat encourages perspiration, which helps to remove toxins from the skin. Additionally, the high concentrations of sulfates found in these springs are beneficial for skin health, as they help exfoliate the skin and stimulate the regeneration of new skin cells.

  • Sulfate, which makes up the white substance floating in some of the pools, is known to help with conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne by soothing the skin and promoting healing.

4. Enhanced Circulation

Soaking in hot springs naturally increases your body’s temperature, which can improve blood circulation. The heat causes your blood vessels to expand, helping oxygen and nutrients reach your tissues more efficiently. This can alleviate headaches, reduce swelling, and even help those suffering from hypertension. The improved circulation can also promote faster healing of injuries by delivering more oxygen to damaged tissue.

5. Respiratory Benefits

The mineral content in natural springs, particularly sodium and sulfates, can also be beneficial for respiratory conditions. Soaking in these hot springs, while breathing in the moist, mineral-rich air, can help to open airways and soothe respiratory irritations like those caused by asthma or allergies.

Why Hot Sulphur Springs?

What makes Hot Sulphur Springs Resort especially unique is not just the variety of pools but also the unfiltered, 100% natural water that’s constantly flowing from the springs. No chemicals are added, and the water is gravity-fed from seven natural springs, which means you’re soaking in the purest and highest mineral concentrated water possible.

Because the resort offers different pool temperatures ranging from 98°F to 112°F, you can choose pools based on how your body feels—start in a cooler pool to get acclimated and then gradually move to the hotter, mineral-rich pools for a more intense soak. This makes the resort an excellent stop for both relaxation and recovery, particularly for those combining their stay with outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, or rafting. Need a massage? They offer that too!

A Hot Spring for Every Mood

What makes the resort truly special is the wide variety of pool temperatures, offering something for every visitor. Courtney particularly appreciated the range of options: “The amount of pools with different temps was wonderful. Once I got hot sitting in the sun and water, I was able to cool down in the shaded spots and pools. I even enjoyed the cold pool; it was very pleasant to cool down and go soak again!”

If you’re like Courtney and enjoy jumping between different temperatures, you’ll love how easy it is to find a spot that’s perfect for you—whether it’s shaded or sun-drenched, hot or cool.

Ethan added: “All the pools were great… so many choices of temps and views. Great mix of scenery and social vibes.” Whether you’re looking for quiet reflection or a more social experience, the resort’s pools cater to all.

Magnesium Pools: Recovery for the Adventurer

For adventurers who push their limits, the magnesium-rich pools are a must. The Pow-Wow pool is specifically higher in magnesium, which is great for soothing sore muscles. Jed found this pool particularly helpful after a tough run: “The best part of the springs was the relaxing magnesium pool. They were a great help for my legs after running Byers Canyon. I was a bruised mess.”

Jonathan echoed the same sentiment after a long hike: “I had hiked 8 miles up in Rocky Mountain National Park the day before, and my joints were killing me. After soaking in the magnesium pools, the next day I felt great enough to hike into Gore Canyon. I’m a believer in those pools for sure!”

Whether you’ve been hiking, paddling, or simply traveling, these magnesium pools work wonders to ease tired muscles and joints, helping you bounce back for the next adventure.

Lakes and Scenic Spots Nearby

Beyond the springs, Hot Sulphur Springs is surrounded by some of Colorado’s most beautiful landscapes and lakes. If you’re visiting in the summer, consider spending a day at Grand Lake, just 45 minutes away. This pristine alpine lake is perfect for boating, paddleboarding, or simply enjoying the stunning mountain views. Closer still is Lake Granby, where you can fish, kayak, or hike along the shoreline.

For a more rugged experience, venture into Rocky Mountain National Park, less than an hour’s drive from the resort. With endless trails and wildlife viewing, it’s a great way to spend a day before unwinding back at the hot springs.

Whether you visit in the heat of summer or the depths of winter, Hot Sulphur Springs Resort is ready to welcome you. In the winter, the pools are even more magical, as you soak in the warmth while surrounded by snow-covered landscapes. The natural flow of water keeps the pools constantly refreshed, with no added chemicals, so you’re always bathing in the purest water.
